RESOURCE, Northumbria Business School 4th Floor, Newcastle
MR PORTER, NYC
This conceptual MR PORTER store was designed to be a bridge between the company's established online presence and connecting with the customer in a more intimate way. Located in the thriving district of SoHo, NYC, the MR PORTER store offers customers the chance to order online and collect in store whilst also browsing the selected stock on display. The design was inspired by traditional gentleman outfitters of Savile Row, London and the disassembled parts of a suit. The use of technology within the design was necessary to maintain the brand's online presence whilst establishing itself on the New York high street. An innovative way to shop was introduced where customers in a rush could stand and swipe through various outfits and styles using hand gestures on augmented reality screens.
Digital access points are located throughout the store including the customized LC2 sofas to allow the customer to explore the entire online catalogue and order in-store. Hidden digital projection signage allows the space to remain flexible to change without serious effort whilst large digital fins adorn the ceiling displaying a vetted twitter feed, "how to" videos and promotional advertising. The "Stitch" pattern projected onto the floor highlights the key areas within this zonal interior.
Traditional and formalised shelving houses much of the physical merchandise, whilst stand out pieces are placed on monolithic concrete plinths, inspired by the concrete jungle's skyline itself. The colour scheme was monochromatic to create an immediatley striking brand presence that reflected both their website and the masculinity of their products. Black and white stained timber finishes are found on the formalised display shelving whilst a highly reflective Bakelite panelled floor contrasts to the marble and concrete plinths.
The basement space is very different to the ground floor. It houses an exhibition space/"get the look" display area, large fitting rooms and a click and collect desk. Walnut flooring is used to create a welcoming atmosphere for the more intimate floor but retained the powerful impact associated with the brand. The click and collect desk is formed out of the various packaging sizes that Mr Porter offers, whilst the glass partitions housing the feature back of house storage are adorned with the disassembled suit parts that inspired the design.
